Buddleja davidii, commonly known as butterfly bush, is a popular garden shrub known for its abundant flowering and ability to attract butterflies. Among the many varieties, 'Black Knight' and 'Royal Red' are particularly valued for their unique flower colors.

'Black Knight' Variety

'Black Knight' is one of the darkest flowering buddleja varieties. Its flower spikes are deep purple, appearing almost black in certain light conditions, giving the variety its name. It blooms from July to September, with long flower clusters reaching up to 30 cm, emitting a sweet fragrance that attracts butterflies and other pollinators. The shrub grows 2-3 meters tall and is easy to care for, thriving in sunny spots, tolerating pruning, and drought-resistant, though it prefers well-drained soil.

'Royal Red' Variety

'Royal Red' is another attractive variety with stunning red-purple flowers that stand out for their intensity. Like 'Black Knight', it blooms in summer, with slightly shorter but equally abundant flower spikes. The shrub reaches up to 3 meters, spreading wide. 'Royal Red' prefers sunny, warm locations and is drought-tolerant. Its fragrant flowers also attract butterflies and bees.

Cultivation and Care

Both varieties are resistant to pests and diseases, and pruning after winter encourages abundant flowering. Buddlejas are best planted in spring to establish roots before winter. Though they may suffer winter frost damage, they typically regenerate quickly in spring. These shrubs thrive in moderately fertile, well-drained soil and can tolerate temporary droughts.

Buddleja davidii, particularly the 'Black Knight' and 'Royal Red' varieties, are ideal for gardeners looking for striking, decorative plants that also support pollinators.
